Obituary of Joan Salveson
Joan Marie Salveson passed away Monday, June 4, 2018 surrounded by part of her large family living in the Volusia County area.
Joan was born on November 6, 1953 in Piketon, Ohio to Thomas Henderson and Elizabeth Rankin. Her family moved to Florida and she began working in the Daytona Beach area while studying for college degree. She had a car accident at the age of 19 that seriously injured her lower back and forced her to quit playing tennis, a game she loved. She eventually went on to enter a number of beauty pageants in the Volusia county area, including the Miss Daytona contest in which she was a runner up.
She graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Accounting while also working at various jobs to pay her way through college. She also attended many classes at night in Orlando while working in Daytona and Deland, Florida.
She then worked various accounting jobs before being hired by a regional CPA firm in Daytona Beach that provide services to many local small businesses. Joan met Bob Salveson at the firm, and they married on April 16, 1985. They eventually moved to the Space Coast area where she was hired by Grumman Aerospace to become a Senior Financial Analyst and worked for them for 14 years, her department was headed up by Fred Haise, Jr the NASA astronaut from the Apollo 13 mission for a good part of her tenure. She was recognized at Grumman for her high level of knowledge as a Financial Analyst by numerous assignments to the corporate headquarters in Beth Page, New York to train other staff members on computer techniques to aide them in their analytical work. Also, she was assigned to be the interface with the Federal Government auditors to make sure that cost allocations on the space program were being accurately charged out to the government.
Joan and Bob moved to Apopka, Florida and built a practice of financial consulting for start up companies after the space program started to wane. It was there that she began to enjoy some time to do traveling and resume playing tennis which became a huge part of her life because of the strong friendships she had made with teammates, the camaraderie from teammates and the physical exercise she received.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Salveson, Apopka; 2 sisters, Pat Kasper, Florence, South Carolina; Kathy Hayden, Deland; 4 brothers Vernon Rankin, Deland, Bob Rankin, Tallahassee, Tim Rankin, Daytona Beach and Todd Rankin, Boise, ID. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 8, 2018 at Lankford Funeral Home Chapel, DeLand, Florida, 4:00 - 5:00 visition, service at 5:00 p.m.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. located at The Table Restaurant, 100 E. New York Avenue, DeLand, Florida
