Obituary of Walter Herm
Walter Calvin Herm age 89, Entered into this world on February 17, 1929 and lost his battle with Alzheimer’s on May 20, 2018.
Walt was from a very large family of nine brothers and sisters, who have all since passed away and they grew up in a small Texas town, Marlin. He joined the Armed Forces, U.S. Airforce, and retired as a Master Sergeant. While in the Air Force, he had a tour of duty during the Korean War and then returned to the United States and married his wonderful wife of 69 years, Earnestine, of which they had five children and resides in Deland, Florida.
After his retirement from the military, Walt began his career with the United Treasury Department, Secret Service, which he served under President Lyndon B. Johnson and President Richard Nixon protecting their homes in Stonewall, Texas and Key Biscayne, Florida. He then transferred to U.S. Customs, Marine Patrol, where he retired as the first Captain on U.S. Customs’ fast boat - “Blue Thunder”. He sure enjoyed his stake-outs looking for drug smugglers and catching “the bad guys” as he used to say.
Walt was such a gentle man, a proud veteran and adored his wife, girls, all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He so enjoyed serving his country and was a brave and loyal soldier, as well as a patient and loving father. He loved to spend time fishing and watching football.
He is survived by his wife Earnestine, daughters Kathleen (Kenneth) Miami FL; Janet Cosper (Fred deceased) Tallahassee, FL; Beverley (Dan deceased) Apoka, FL; Lori (Sean) Hiram, GA and Shannon (John) Dallas, GA. Grandchildren, Robby Rutter (Lori); Jake Cosper and Justin (Julie) Cosper; Trent Beverly and Connor Beverly (Hanna) Heather Ridgeway (Charlie); Ryan Fallon (Quinn); Jordan Bevis, Kenzie Bevis, Naythan Bevis, Harley Bevis. Great-Grandchildren, Tyler Rutter, Madison Rutter, Hunter Rutter; Hunter Cosper and Mason Cosper; Drayton Beverly and Tyler Beverly; Joeseph Ridgeway.
We will all miss our dear daddy, grandad and great-grandad. Until we see you again in heaven, you will forever be in our hearts and we love you eternally. God Bless you.
Funeral services for Walter Herm will be Wednesday, May 23, 2018, 10:00 - 10:30 visitation, service begins at 10:30 at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Avenue, Deland, Florida. Interment at Oakdale Cemetery, Deland, Florida immediately following the service.
