Obituary of Thomas F. Oltorik

Tom Oltorik

Isle of Palms, SC - Thomas F. Oltorik, Sr., 84, beloved husband of Diane E. Oltorik for 60 years, passed on October 27, 2020 in Deltona, FL, enveloped in the love of his family.

Born in Scranton, PA on August 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Thomas and Helen (Paczwa) Oltorik.

Tom grew up on Albright Avenue. From an early age, Tom had a love for baseball and basketball and spent a lot of time playing ball at Weston Field. He attended Scranton Central HS, where he was the starting pitcher (baseball) and point guard (basketball). His athletic success in high school earned him a full athletic scholarship to the University of Scranton where he studied Business Administration. After three years at Scranton, Tom transferred to The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he continued to play both baseball and basketball. He graduated in 1959 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Tom then entered the United States Air Force (USAF) as a Second Lieutenant. He eventually earned his MS in Reliability Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.

While at Catholic University, Tom met his wife, Diane. They were married on April 23, 1960, in St Ann’s Church in Washington, DC. Tom served on active duty in the USAF until 1967 and continued in the USAF Reserve until his retirement from the military in 1987 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After leaving active duty, Tom and Diane settled in Irondequoit, NY, where they raised their five children. Tom had an accomplished career at General Dynamics, Xerox, and eventually retired in 1997 from Eastman Kodak’s Federal Systems Division. While at Xerox, Tom was given an assignment at Rank Xerox in Welwyn Garden City, near London, England. He and his family were in England for over two years and traveled extensively throughout both Eastern and Western Europe.

Tom and his wife, Diane, were longtime residents of the Isle of Palms, SC, having settled in 1997 in the retirement home they purchased in 1986.

Tom was dedicated to lending his time and efforts on behalf of others.  He was particularly proud of his years performing charity work as a member of the Knights of Columbus, eventually serving as Grand Knight of Council 4691 in Irondequoit, NY. Even in retirement, Tom continued his community service, spending 14 years as president of the Isle of Palms, Beachside Owners' Association. Tom was an usher for many years at Stella Maris RC Church on Sullivan’s Island. For 13 years, Tom served as a Volunteer Usher Coordinator for the Women’s Tennis Association Family Circle Cup on Daniel Island.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Diane, five children, Thomas, Jr., (Regina) of DeLand, FL, Dennis (Michelle) of Blue Ash, OH, Stephen of New York, NY, David (Suzanna) of Arlington, VA, and Janelle (Matthew) Wilkinson of Ringoes, NJ, as well as ten grandchildren: Thomas, James, & Nathan (Thomas, Jr.), Ross & Ryan (Dennis), Christopher, Andrew, and  Lauren (David), and Eleanor & Henry (Janelle).

Tom was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Pettinato.

A Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Lakes RC Church in Deltona, FL on Saturday, October 31, 2020.

"A Celebration of Life Memorial Mass will be held Saturday November 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Stella Maris RC Church on Sullivan’s Island, SC.  The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Wounded Warrior Project."
