Obituary of Stephen M. Blais
Stephen Maurice Blais, 68, passed away peacefully Friday, September 18th, surrounded by his loving family.
Steve was born in Madisonville Kentucky, but migrated to Volusia County in 1968 when he was sixteen years old. He was the youngest of his mother Francis Blais’ four sons, and he was a loving, devoted, and proud father of a daughter and two sons.
A longtime resident of Deland, Florida Steve, began his life of service to the community with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office as a dispatcher. He was later offered an opportunity to work for the Deland Sun News, and later transitioned to an advertising sales position at the West Volusia Penny Saver, which was owned by the Daytona Beach News Journal. Steve quickly worked his way up through the corporation’s ranks to become the General Manager of the West Volusia Penny Saver, until his retirement in 2007.
During his career at the Penny Saver, Steve was sponsored and joined the Deland Breakfast Rotary Club in 1989, and subsequently joined the Deland Evening Rotary Club where he served until his passing.
Steve dedicated his life in service of the Deland and West Volusia area communities, where he used his business talents to develop partnerships to improve the community he loved so dearly. Steve was instrumental in raising funding for numerous projects benefiting Volusia County’s citizens, by using his advertising, management, and leadership skills to develop and assist the many other dedicated members of local organizations, charities, and volunteers to accomplish the task at hand.
Steve’s love for the West Volusia area was always present, whether he was sitting in a board room conducting business for one of the many charities he assisted with, attending or holding meetings with the Rotary Clubs, assisting in the planning and fundraising of Deland’s Chili Cook Offs and Fall Festivals, or just sitting outside at one of the local eateries chatting with friends.
Some of his fondest memories revolved around this area, his days fishing on the St Johns River, hunting the West Volusia woods, Riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, spending time with his family, or just simply talking with his dear friends. Ultimately, his greatest joy was simply helping others and making those around him happy.
Steve’s devotion to his family, friends, and his community, his honor, integrity, work ethic, and slightly rebellious nature were engrained in him at a young age. His sly smile, heartfelt laughter, and his sense of humor will long be remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Steve is survived by the love of his life, his loving wife, Jo; his children, Alechia, Aaron, and Jeremy; his six grandchildren, Taelan, Nolan, Jonathan, Ezra, Justin and Jason; his great grandchild, Bransen; and his brother, James (Jim).
In honor of his memory, a Celebration of Life will be hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Deland between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on October 6, 2020 at the Deland Elks Lodge, located at 614 S. Alabama Ave, Deland , Florida 32724.
