Obituary of Robert H. Baird
In loving memory of Robert H. Baird, July 19, 1944 – June 9, 2020
Bob passed away suddenly on June 9th in Deland, Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Helen (Butler) Baird.
Bob was born in New York and when he was young his family moved to South Florida. After high school he served active duty in the Army and fought for our country in Vietnam. Bob was a very patriotic and proud American and loved his country.
When he returned from Vietnam, he worked for Smith Corona and learned the photo copier business. A few years later he went out on his own and started his own business called “Bob Baird Photo Copy” in Hollywood, Florida. Bob retired to Deland, Florida in 1999. He picked Deland to retire to because he visited friends in Deland over many years and liked the slower pace, less traffic and peaceful nature of Deland compared to South Florida.
Bob was very passionate about many things including his beloved cats (his “kids” with four legs) and the colony community cats he cared for and loved each and every day. He also enjoyed restoring vintage cars with a special focus on Ford Galaxies. He very much enjoyed photography and within the last year or so would send many friends a picture of the sunrise each day. Doo wop music was a favorite of his, but he enjoyed all types of music. Bob also studied and received his pilot’s license and had a lot of fun flying planes over the years.
He especially liked to spend time with his friends. He had so many people that called him friend! There were his friends from childhood, South Florida friends, his neighbors, his car friends, his cat circle of friends and so many more!
Bob was a serious animal advocate and lived his life to make things better for animals. He was involved with Deland moving toward a TNR program and proudly served on the Volusia County Animal Control Board. In addition, he was the Vice President for Cat Tail Corners, which is a cat sanctuary. He had a special place in his heart for the cats at Cat Tail Corners and the mission the sanctuary carries out caring for unwanted and abandoned cats.
Bob was a very unique guy…a real “one of a kind” with a very kind and special soul! He would help anyone if he could and he touched everyone’s life he encountered. He was a “story guy”. Bob had a story to tell relating to any type of situation. His heart was so big for the animals he loved and for the friends that cared about him and enriched his life. Anyone who knows him knows that his special friends and all the cats he spoiled were what gave him joy and true meaning to his life.
The people left behind with heavy hearts will miss him greatly, and we will all carry on his legacy. We can do that by being a good friend to others and always being kind to animals. Bob will be proud if we carry on his amazing work, and we will absolutely do that!
He will be reuniting with all his loved ones that had gone before him and he will also see his four legged “kids” that passed before he did. He missed them all, so it will be wonderful for them to be together again.
There will not be a funeral per Bob’s wishes, but there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date, to be determined.
Lankford Funeral Home was in charge.
