Obituary of James Rodes Lawrence
Jimmy Rodes Lawrence 75 of DeLand, Fl passed away suddenly on September 16, 2019.
When you ask what Jimmy has done in our community the answer would be what he hasn’t done!
Being in the family fern, poultry and agriculture industry for his life led Jimmy to serving on many boards as President. He became the spokesperson for the fern industry during the winter months with the TV reporters or when something happened in the fern industry. He was a man of great faith and served in Trinity United Methodist Church, a church his great grandfather helped build. In community service he is past president of the Kiwanis, Quarterback Club Deland Chamber Of Commerce and many more. Jimmy was instrumental in the fund raising efforts and bringing the YMCA to West Volusia. He assisted the Rotary Clubs with taking the veterans to Washington for the Honor Air Flights of which he made 3 separate flights. He and Patty left DeLand and moved to Cedar Key and Jimmy found a part time job driving a school bus there for many years. He was an avid Gator fan and was often seen riding in his Gator themed golf cart all around Cedar Key. After moving back to DeLand, Jimmy could be seen on Sunday ushering at the church and even worked part time as a funeral assistant with Lankford Funeral Home. Family was important to him and he loved taking trips with Patty in their motor home. Until recently, he volunteered at Florida Hospital DeLand. Jimmy was anything but idle during his life.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 43 years, Patty, son, Jamie Lawrence, Jr. (Younghee ) daughters, LeAnn Strickland and Ronette Lawrence and 5 grandchildren, Jacob, Gavin, Brittney, Betty and Raleigh.
To honor a life well lived the viewing will be at Lankford Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at Trinity United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will be honoring Jimmy by wearing Gator orange and blue and encourage any who would like to join them in doing the same.
