Obituary of Suzanne Harbert Boice

Suzanne “Suzee” Harbert Boice, most recently of DeLand, Florida passed away peacefully on July12, 2019 at the age of 96.

Suzee was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on March 15, 1923 to parents Ralph Warren Harbert and Zulma “Zee” Allen Harbert.  She attended high school in Battle Creek and Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut from 1940-1942.

In 1943 Suzee married Nelson Runyon Boice. After WWII and stints in NYC and Los Gatos, CA Suzee and Nels settled in Orlando in 1950 where she lived first in South Orlando then Maitland/Winter Park from 1960 on, until moving to DeLand in 2017.

In 1946 Suzanne Whitman Boice was born, the delight of Suzee’s life.

Suzee was preceded in death by her daughter in 2004 and her husband in 2009, as well as her parents and her beloved brothers, Ralph and Ron.

Suzee enjoyed a robust and active life.  She and Nels travelled extensively, taking many adventurous trips before adventure travel existed: Africa, South America, Alaska amongst the wilds, Europe many times, Russia, New Zealand & Australia.  The great pleasure of their life was boating. After multiple smaller live-aboard boats through the ‘60’s,‘70’s, and ‘80’s, they realized the dream of designing and building their own boat in 1990.  For 10 years "Whistler" was home for over 6 months a year with trips, north and south from Florida to Maine and back on the inland waterway with extensive time in the Chesapeake and most especially months at a time in the Bahamas where they would anchor out and be completely off the grid.  They enjoyed entertaining friends and family and would often have guests aboard for weeks at a time.

In Orlando, Suzee was very active in the greater Orlando community as a member of the Junior League, The Rosalind Club, The Genius Foundation of The Morse Gallery in Winter Park, and The Church of the Good Sheppard in Maitland among other organizations.

Suzee had a lively sense of humor and loved celebrating life by writing poems to commemorate events large and small. She will be missed tremendously. Suzee is survived by her only grandchild, granddaughter, Aubrey Sipe Phillips of Charlottesville, Virginia and three great-grandchildren, Jackson Boice Phillips, Carlow Suzanne Phillips and Elizabeth Perry Phillips all of Charlottesville. Suzee had special relationships with her nieces, Sarah Kundinger and Nancy Harbert, and nephews Tom, Nick, & John Harbert.  She also enjoyed her many grand nieces and nephews.

No funeral service will be held.  A private family gathering will be held in Suzee’s honor at a yet to be determined date. Memories, wishes & condolences may be shared by mailing to PO BOX 85 Montpelier Station, VA 22957
