Obituary of Wayne West Smith
Wayne W. Smith passed away March 7, 2019, peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Wayne was born in Pueblo, Colorado on August 31, 1944, and moved with his family to central Florida at an early age and settled in DeLand a short time after. He graduated from DeLand High School in 1962 and went on to graduate from the best school ever, University of Florida, in 1966, GO GATORS. He moved back to DeLand to work in the family business, Flamingo Springs Water.
Upon selling of the family business, Wayne had many business ventures with his family including mortgage brokering, real estate and restaurants. He found the perfect partnership at Quick and Associates, exceling in the insurance business, and remained there until his retirement.
Super Uncle Wayne, as he is affectionately known to his many nieces and nephews, had a passion for the water. His greatest adventure was the sailboat voyage celebrating Columbus’s 500-year anniversary trip, where he sailed with friends from Spain to the U.S. in 1992. He enjoyed many trips to the Bahamas, fishing, hunting and his much-loved Drayton Island.
Wayne was a staple of the DeLand community for many years as a member of the Jaycees and Kiwanis. He held every position in each club and enjoyed doing activities to help support the DeLand community, including the Christmas Parade, of which he chaired in 1971.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Former DeLand Mayor Sidney and Maxine Smith, sister, Sharon Gey, and wife, Delores.
He is survived by his sister, Corliss Smith, DeLeon Springs, FL, daughter Shannon Zak (Tom), St. Augustine, FL, step-daughter Kelly Jones (Terry) Hickory, NC, step-son Jeff Hoxworth, Kernersville, NC and his beloved grandchildren, Thomas, Sydnie, Savannah, Heather and Hannah.
Services will be March 23, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Lankford Funeral Home.
