Obituary of Charles Bruce Baird, Sr.

April 18, 1935 - January 31, 2019

Charles Bruce Baird, Sr. passed away peacefully at home in Fairfax, VA on January 31, 2019. He is survived and deeply missed by his wife, Byung Ran and daughters, Merah Iris and Haerah Violet.  From his previous marriage to Barbara Fabian, he is survived by sons Charles Bruce Baird, Jr., Robert Arthur, Bryan James; and their children Robert, Carol-Ann, Robert Arthur Jr., Maree, Grace, James, John, Hannah, Anne, Brice, Brianna, Sarah Grace, and Katelyn. He is preceded in passing by his parents James Turner and Ethelyn Williams Baird of Deland, FL and Brother James Turner, Jr. of Rockville, MD.

Bruce, as he was known to friends and family, was born in DeLand, FL on April 18, 1935. He attended the University of Miami on a piccolo scholarship, where he pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.  After graduation, he attended Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned as an Officer in the US Navy where he served for three years on active duty in the Bureau of Ordnance in Washington, DC. Upon transition out of the military, Bruce began  working as an aerospace engineer in California later completing his MBA (California State University, Fullerton 1967) and Juris Doctor (The American University, Washington College of Law 1971). He became an attorney in 1971 and joined the Virginia State Bar Association. He received many academic and professional awards, and was published numerous times in various academic and professional capacities.

Bruce had a lifelong love of baseball,  traveling, and enjoyed going to the beach. He was ever the engineer, taking on house projects and renovations with gusto.  Bruce always had a soft spot for his pet dogs: Rex, King, Suki, Freckles, Pfeffer and Salz. He found joy and comfort in good food, listening to music, reading, relaxing in a comfortable hooded sweatshirt, and most of all his family.  He touched each person’s life in his own unique way, and will be loved and missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will take place at 1 PM on Sat. Feb. 9, 2019 in the Trinity United Methodist Church with services to follow at 2PM.
