Johnny Sixma, a well-known third generation lifelong West Volusia County rancher and dairyman passed away on February 2nd. He was born to George and Gladys Wells Sixma on the family farm near Lake Helen on December 28, 1929. He had a lifelong love of ranching and agriculture. In addition to the Sixma Dairy operation, he bred, trained and raced a long line of quarter horses and thoroughbreds which were one of his true passions. After graduating from Deland High School in 1947 he worked on the family farm and married the late Dolores Machek of Samsula in 1953.  Soon after, he was drafted into the Army and stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he learned to launch Honest John missiles. After his discharge, he and Dolores moved back to the Sixma farm near Deltona and started a family. He was an active member of the Florida Farm Bureau, Florida Cattleman’s Association, Florida Quarter Horse Association and Blake Memorial Baptist Church in Lake Helen. He is survived by his three children, Stuart (Lisa) Sixma, Ponce Inlet, FL; Bonnie O’Keefe, Deltona; Stony (Yvonne) Sixma, Deltona; four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many lifelong friends that enriched his life many times over. Services are pending under the great care of Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, Florida.
