Obituary of James A Roberts
James Roberts, 71, died October 16th, at Florida Hospital, Deland due to complications from acute leukemia. His memorial service will be held this Friday, October 19th at Temple Baptist Church, Deltona, Florida at 5:00 PM. The address is 732 Debary Ave, Deltona, Florida 32725.
Jim was born on June 2, 1947 in St. Albans, Vermont and spent his young childhood in Morrisville, Vermont. He moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida in fifth grade. Jim was a Gator, graduating from University of Gainesville with his bachelor’s degree and later earned several post-secondary degrees focused on special education and educational administration. He was a beloved DeLand teacher educating children at Dempsey Brewster, Blue Lake Elementary, and Woodward Ave Elementary School. During his last eleven years he co-taught with his wife, Deborah Roberts, at Woodward Elementary instituting both the full-inclusion model and the single gender class. During his lifetime, James had many interesting jobs along with teaching, such as a Good-Humor Ice-cream Truck salesman, an ambulance driver, a janitor at Stetson and a teacher at Reality House.
Jim served faithfully at Temple Baptist Church for many years driving the bus to pick up children for church and teaching Masters Club.
Traveling and running were two of Jim’s passions. Jim traveled throughout the US with his good friends, Carl and JoAnne Rodke, hiking and camping his way through national parks. He spent many summers with his wife, Robin and the kids in Colorado. He ran 10 marathons along with a multitude of half-marathons, 10k’s and 5k’s.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Roberts; daughters, Robin Diedrichs and Tammy Chaney; grandchildren, Zachary Grooten, Elijah and Maximus Diedrichs, Isaac Roberts, Emily and Olivia Chaney, Casey, Jared and Kendle Allred; sisters, Christine May and Alice Trescott; nephews, Scott and Kim May, Scot Randall and grandnephew, Tyler May.
