Obituary of Don Page

Donald Archer Page was born on May 12, 1928 and died September 5, 2018.  A marvelous athlete, Don won letters in baseball, football, basketball and golf and was president of his senior class at Peoria High School. He then attended Depaw University got married and he had three children: Frances Page Glascoe, PhD, Charlette Lee Rorech, BA, and Captain David Conrad Page.

He moved to DeLand in 1957 to work at the Conrad Insurance Agency. Voted #1 Independent Life Insurance Agent of the Year in 1959, Don won a family trip to Disney Land. After becoming a real estate and insurance broker, Don started the Page Agency on New York Avenue. Realizing DeLand lacked a locally-sourced bank, Don became a founding member and first president of DeLand State Bank (now SunTrust).

A gifted raconteur and educator, Don, in his spare time (!), joined the faculty at Stetson University’s School of Business.  He initiated the Breakfast Rotary Club and was elected President of DeLand Rotary. He was City Commissioner and then Mayor of DeLand from 1973 – 1977.

Barbara Rutter Dykes became Don’s beautiful bride in 1967 and together they raised her children including Druanne Dykes White, JD. Don was supremely proud of his children’s educational attainments and many accomplishments.   He and Barbara were members of the The First Church of Christ, Scientist.

In his retirement, Don directed fund-raising for the Stetson Golf Team. He and Barbara spent summers in Black Mountain, North Carolina where they volunteered at the Christian Ministry and Kiwanis Thrift Shop. Don and Barbara reported, “We’re busier in retirement than we were when working full-time.”

Don will be buried at Oakdale Cemetery. A life celebration will be held at Lankford Funeral Home on September 15, 2018 at 4:00 pm.
