Obituary of Richard Cook
Richard Raymond Cook, 73, passed away on September 3, 2018. Richard was born April 15, 1945, in Beech Grove (Indianapolis), Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University in 1967 and from Indiana University School of Law in 1970. He served on active duty in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972, stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Fort Hood, Texas. Following his service in the Army, he moved with his family to Marion, Indiana to practice law. In 1978, he moved to DeLand, Florida, practicing law in that community until his retirement. Richard had a heart for serving those in the community. He was active in the life of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as a Sunday school teacher, congregation leader, and deacon. Richard regularly served with the Interfaith Kitchen providing meals and encouragement to those struggling with homelessness. He was a certified Guardian Ad Litem for Circuit 7, including Volusia County. Richard served as a Boy Scout troop leader for a number of years. He also supported the work of Habitat for Humanity. In his free time, Richard loved to fish, read, and spend time outdoors. He was passionate about his Indiana Hoosiers, Florida Gators, and enjoyed watching sports. Richard is survived by two children, Shawn Cook (Wendy Hearn) of Port St. Lucie, and Shannon Cook (Bart Hanna) of Norman, Oklahoma, and a grandson, Zach Cook. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Dee Roepke Cook, and his parents, Fred and Charlotte Cook, all of DeLand.
Viewing will be Tuesday, September 11, 2018 1:00p.m. at the First Christian Church, DeLand, Florida followed by services at 2:00pm with Pastor Linda Kemp-Baird officiating.
