Mel Ott, 85, passed peacefully on February 2, 2020 at his home in DeLand, Florida. His funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and services will be at 2:00 p.m. followed by internment at Oakdale Cemetery. Mel was born on April 23, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama and grew up in Ocala, Florida. Upon graduation from Stetson University in 1956 he joined the Gould Agency, followed by starting Mel Ott Insurance and Real Estate. In 1956, Mel married Carol Chapman who he referred to as his “Southern Bell”. Together they spent 48 years traveling the world, supporting community projects and raising their five sons. He was known for many things; supporting youth programs, a successful businessman, Gator Booster, Rotarian and was Famous for leaving people happier than he found them. But most of all he was known as a great Family man who loved his wife and was proud of his Five Sons. Mel was survived by what he proudly referred to as “Lots of Otts”, including sons; Mike Ott (Lee) of Ellijay, GA, Brad Ott (Heidi) of DeLand, FL, David Ott (Linda) of Nashville, TN, Roger Ott (Sandy) of Ellijay, GA; and Jim Ott (Beverly) of DeLand. Mel had 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. The Angels are gathering to see who is singing so joyfully as Mel passes through Heaven’s gate.
