Nita Hansen, 90, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2019, surrounded by her family. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, February 9th, in the Chapel at First Baptist Church, DeLand, Florida.
Mrs. Hansen was born on July 21, 1928 in Jacksonville, Florida. There, she met her future husband of 36 years, Keith Hansen, literally down the street! As youths, Keith and Nita were active in Main Street Baptist Church, where they were eventually married by their Pastor (and Keith’s father), Reverend Thomas Hansen. Following Keith’s service during WWII, the young couple enrolled in Stetson University. As college students, they were dorm parents, worked together on the switch board and studied feverishly, each trying to best the others’ grades! Mrs. Hansen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, “Summa Cum Laude”, in 1950 from Stetson University and went on to complete a M. A. in Education in 1953 from the University of Florida.
Nita served as an elementary school teacher for over 30 years, but realized her professional dream when she became certified to teach in the Gifted Program. She began at Dempsey Brewster in 1978, moved to McGinnis Elementary for the next 9 years, and finally to George Marks Elementary School. She retired in 1990 following a career spent enlightening young minds.
Mrs. Hansen was a member of The University Women’s Club at Stetson, later The Summit Club for retirees, the PEO Sisterhood, and the Phi Society (the precursor to Phi Beta Kappa).
She is survived by her former husband, Keith, their two daughters, Cynthia and Kym, and one grand-daughter, Emily.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Hansen’s name to The House Next Door or Habitat for Humanity.
Lankford Funeral Home is in charge.
