Marie Henry Maitland, 96, went home to her Lord on January 5, 2019. She was born in the Smokey Mountain community of Cosby, Tennessee on May 17, 1922, the fourth of five children born to Harrison Henry and Bessie Huskey Henry. In the early 1940’s she moved to Cleveland, Ohio to work in the manufacture of aviation parts for the war effort. While there she met and married her husband, Charles Maitland. They lived in northern Pennsylvania for several years and then moved to Miami, FL in 1949. She worked for the Miami-Dade Library System for 33 years. After her retirement, she moved to Deland to be closer to family.
She was a former member of Deland Friends of the Library and the West Volusia Audubon Society. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Deland where she served as church librarian for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Maitland; her parents, Harrison and Bessie Henry; her brothers, Walter and Clay Henry; and her sisters, Gladys Lee and Mildred Henry. She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie M. Redd (Ted); grandson, Robert Redd (Christine); granddaughter, Kellie R. Steward; and great granddaughters, Meghan and Mollie Steward.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday January 10, 2019 at 11:00 AM in the Oakdale Cemetery in Deland with Pastor Johnnie Long presiding. Family request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the First Baptist Church in her memory.
