Robert McElroy Grier

Robert McElroy Grier, 77, of DeLand, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025. Known to all as "Mac," he was born in Monmouth, Illinois, to Robert and Shirley Grier.

Mac dedicated his life to service—both to his country and his community. He proudly served in the United States Navy before embarking on a long and distinguished career with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, retiring as a Lieutenant. Even after retirement, he continued to live life to the fullest, pursuing the hobbies he loved most. At the top of his list was flying and building planes, but he also found great joy in golfing, traveling, working crossword puzzles, and indulging in anything Elvis-related. And when it came to dining out—well, that was a necessity, as Lynn wasn’t exactly fond of cooking!

Mac was deeply committed to his community. He was a dedicated Pilgrim Degree member of the Moose Lodge, a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason, and an active member of the VFW Post in DeLand. His presence and contributions will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Shirley Grier, and son Randy P. Grier. Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 35 years, Lynn, his son, Robert (Robb) Grier, grandson, Randy Grier Jemison (Kristairy), great grandson, Coast Ray Jemison, sister, Jackie Salvato and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Thank you to all our family and friends who have been our support through this long journey. We would not have been able to do it without you. A special thank you to Mrs. Velda Johnson, who moved right in whenever we needed her help. Also, thank you to the Advent Health DeLand ICU nurses for your kindness and support to both of us.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, March 6th, at 1:00p.m. at Lankford Funeral Home. Following the service, family and friends will gather to share food and memories at Victoria Hills Golf Course Azalea Room.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mac’s honor to the fund for rebuilding the VFW DeLand or a charity of your choice.
