Richard Howe, affectionately known as "Bud," passed away peacefully at home in Deland, Florida, on September 5, 2024, at the age of 92.

Born on August 1, 1932, in Buffalo, New York, to Howard and Jetty Howe, Richard earned his beloved nickname from his mother, who called him "her little buddy." Over time, "buddy" evolved into "Bud," and the name stuck throughout his life. Richard grew up in Bayview, New York, where he attended Woodlawn High School. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Navy with his best friend, Kenny Gokey.

During his four years of service, Richard was stationed on both the U.S.S. Talladega, a Haskell-class attack transport, and the U.S.S. Balduck, a Crosley-class high-speed transport. He was awarded several medals, including the Medal for Good Conduct, a Service Medal for China and Korea, and one for National Defense.

After leaving the Navy, Richard moved to Miami, Florida, in 1960 to join his younger brother, Ron, and his family. It was there he met and married his beloved wife, Shirley, on November 14, 1965, in Hollywood, Florida. Together, they shared 59 years of marriage. In 1974, Richard and Ron relocated to Deland, Florida, where the brothers co-owned and operated Super Discount Supply, a popular hardware store in the area. Richard retired in 2000 after many successful years in business.

Richard was a talented woodworker, crafting beautiful pieces of furniture and clocks that he lovingly gave to friends as gifts, leaving behind a legacy of skill and generosity.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; his son, Chris (Amy) Howe; grandchildren, Lauren Howe, Scott Howe, Ashley Murphy, and Forrest (Elizabeth) Murphy; and great-granddaughter, Stella Murphy. He is also survived by his step-siblings, Ray, Randy, and Linda Howe. Richard is predeceased by his grandson, Gage Howe, and his brother, Ron Howe.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., with a service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Lankford Funeral Home in Deland, Florida. Richard will be laid to rest at Glenwood Cemetery following the service.

Richard will be fondly remembered for his service to his country, his craftsmanship, and his devotion to his family and friends. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
