It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Edwin Dykstra, Junior, who passed away on March 15, 2025, at Advent Health Hospice in Orange City, FL. He was 80 years old.
Paul was born on March 11, 1945, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Paul E. Dykstra, Sr, and Verona Brothers Dykstra. He grew up on the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he spent much of his youth enjoying fishing and boating. His time on the water and the coast left a lasting impact on him, and he carried those cherished memories throughout his life.
A dedicated scholar, Paul attended Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, Virginia, where he graduated with honors. He continued his education at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree. Paul’s passion for education led him to Stetson University in Deland, Florida, where he received his Master’s in Education.
Paul’s career in education began at Florida Military School in Deland, where he taught English. He later moved to Deland High School, where he continued teaching English and was promoted to Dean of Discipline. His career then took him to Deltona Junior High as Assistant Principal, and from there to Taylor Middle/High School as Principal. He ultimately concluded his career as a District Administrator of Instructional Materials, retiring in 2004. During his time in education, Paul was a dedicated member of the Florida Association of District Instructional Administrators, serving as President from 1997 to 1998. He was recognized with the Outstanding Service Award in 1996 by the association for his exceptional contributions.
Outside of work, Paul was a man of many interests. As a young man, he enjoyed golfing and fishing, activities he loved to share with family and friends. He was a passionate fan of North Carolina Tar Heel basketball and the New York Yankees. One of his greatest joys in life was cooking for his family, with specialties that included his famous Carolina BBQ, Christmas Eve chili, New Year’s Day black-eyed peas, and a big pot of hot, steaming navy beans.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Paula, two sons, Jay Risley and his wife Nikki, along with their children Jet and Ace; and James Dykstra and his wife Darcy, along with their daughter Grace. He will also be missed by his beloved dogs, Moose, Donut, and Rocky. Paul was known for his quirky sayings, often reminding those around him to be "Fair to midland," they "Gotta have a plan," and to "Always have a stash."
