Nona M. (Henderson) Buford, 87 of DeLand passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. She was born to Murl and Winona (Andrews) Henderson in Vandalia, IL on July 28, 1934. Nona grew up in Mt. Vernon, IL, where she married her high school sweetheart, John Philip (Phil) Buford on May 23, 1953. They spent the next 50 years together until Phil's passing in 2003. In the course of their many moves, Nona found herself at the helm of numerous Newcomers' Clubs, often as President. After her children were grown, Nona enjoyed a career in bookkeeping. In DeLand she worked for the Cloisters, and later as the Director of Tourist Tax Collection for Volusia County from 1990 to 2003. She had also been a Realtor for Vincent’s Realty of Deland.

Nona loved her family, big band and jazz music,chocolate, turquoise- the color AND the stone, the beach, gardening and flowers, and ANY kind of party or celebration. In recent years, she had a passion for football, especially the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Florida Gators.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Phil, an infant son, Robert, two brothers in law and two sisters in law.

She is survived by her children; Becky (Mark) Bernhardy, HInckley,IL, R. Scott Buford, Woodstock, GA, and Barbara S Buford, Elgin, IL; her four grandchildren; Michael (Marilyne Wright) Bernhardy, Belleville, IL, David (Christina) Bernhardy, Chicago, IL, Alexandra Bernhardy, Chicago, IL, and Bob Buford, Cocoa Beach, FL; as well as her siblings; Marietta Lamberson, Mt Vernon IL, Andrew Henderson, Orlando, FL, Sondra (Terry) Wafler, DeLand, her extra special niece, Vicky Lamberson, and many other much beloved nieces and nephews.Services will be held at the FIrst United Methodist Church of DeLand on Monday, October 18, at 4pm. Friends may call at 2:00pm until the time of service. Memorials can be made to The First United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. Interment will be private.
