Michael William James, beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on December 7, 2024, in DeLand, Florida, at the age of 75. Born on July 21, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, Michael lived a life full of adventure, passion, and love for his family, friends, and the open road.
Michael served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, exemplifying courage and dedication. After his military service, he built a successful career at General Motors, where he later retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and perseverance.
A man of many passions, Michael found joy on the water and on the open road. He cherished his time living aboard his boat, the "Whiskey Sunday," where he spent many peaceful days on the St. Johns River. During his time in Michigan, he enjoyed fishing on Lake Huron in Au Gres aboard his boat, "Semaj." His love for Harley-Davidson motorcycles fueled his spirit of freedom and adventure as he enjoyed countless daytime rides with his close friends.
Michael loved classic cars. He took great pride in fully restoring a 1964 Mercury Comet alongside his daughter, Amanda, a project that embodied his patience, and craftsmanship. He also restored a 1969 Plymouth Satellite, which he enjoyed showcasing at car shows, where he connected with fellow enthusiasts who shared his passion.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Amanda James, his sisters, Joan Weckle and Rita Rawson, his cherished nieces and nephews, and his devoted girlfriend, Sissy. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael James; his parents, Rita and Leonard James; and his brother, Leonard James. Michael’s enduring love and influence will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date, and details will be shared with family and friends. Those wishing to honor Michael’s memory are encouraged to remember the joy he found in life's simple pleasures—a ride on a Harley, a cruise on "Whiskey Sunday," and the satisfaction of a restoration well done. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to share your favorite memories of Michael, keeping his adventurous and loving spirit alive in your hearts.
