Lowell "Ed" Renfroe

March 13, 1937 — December 11, 2024

Lowell Edwin “Ed” Renfroe, a beloved leader, devoted family man, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, at Halifax Health in Orange City, Florida. Born on March 13, 1937, in Lake Butler, Florida, Ed’s life was marked by hard work, community service, and a profound love for his family.

Ed’s journey of excellence began at Louisiana State University, where he earned his degree in business. His career in banking started with an entry-level position at Barnett Bank in Jacksonville around 1960. It was there that he met Peggy Beck, a fellow Barnett employee, who would become his loving wife in 1961. With a sharp aptitude for the banking industry and an unwavering work ethic, Ed quickly climbed the ranks. His leadership potential caught the eye of Barnett’s President, William R. Barnett, who entrusted him to manage Barnett Bank’s operations in DeLand starting in 1962.

Over the course of his career, Ed’s impact was undeniable. He rose to become Market President and CEO of Barnett Bank’s Volusia and Flagler County branches, a role he held until his retirement in 1997. His leadership style, marked by kindness, integrity, and approachability, earned him multiple accolades, including CEO of the Year honors. His influence extended beyond the workplace, as he became a respected mentor to colleagues and a trusted advisor to the customers he served.

Ed was also a very generous community benefactor where his dedication to education and youth development was evident. His contributions to the community were further recognized in 1998 when he was honored with The Distinguished Service Award from Stetson University.

A man of many interests, Ed found joy on the golf course and in the serene beauty of his summer home in North Carolina. He was a long-time member of the Lake Beresford Yacht Club, where he formed lasting friendships and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow members. A devout member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Ed’s faith was a guiding force in his life.

At the heart of Ed’s world was his family. He shared a loving marriage with Peggy for 53 years until her passing in 2015. Together, they built a legacy of love and devotion that continues through their daughter, Becky Renfroe, and granddaughter, Danielle Corgan. Perhaps Ed’s most treasured role was that of great-grandfather to Rowan Corgan, who he described as the absolute greatest joy of his life. He was a brother to Thomas Renfroe (deceased), James Renfroe, Paul Renfroe, and Judy Morgan, and he cherished the bonds they shared.

Lowell Edwin “Ed” Renfroe’s life was a testament to the power of perseverance, leadership, and love. His influence will be felt for generations to come through the lives of his family, friends, and the community he served so passionately. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
