Jeanette Mary Sekula, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Halifax Health Hospice in Orange City, Florida.
Born on August 4, 1950, in Manhattan, New York, Jeanette was the youngest of three children. She graduated from York College with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in mathematics. Throughout her career, she embraced many roles, working as a kindergarten teacher, an administrative executive at a helicopter company, and a realtor-owner at John Sekula and Associates, where she managed all aspects of property management. She also owned a baby boutique for several years with her daughter Jeanine. However, her greatest joy came from being a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, cherishing the time spent raising her family.
Jeanette was deeply involved in her community. She was a charter member of the Krewe of Amalee, serving as treasurer for over 15 years, and an active member of the Sunflower Circle in the Garden Club. She had a heart for helping others, always ready to listen, offer advice, provide support, or simply be a guiding light to friends and family.
Her passions were centered around her family and the activities she loved. She found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren, cheering them on at baseball games and golf tournaments. A lover of travel, Jeanette cherished trips to Scotland and Poland, where she explored her family's heritage, and she was always excited for her next cruise adventure. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, visiting casinos, and shopping—especially when she found a good sale. She was a natural leader and an expert negotiator who could charm just about anyone into seeing things her way. She also loved Danielle Steel novels, Hallmark Channel movies, and a great cup of coffee—preferably a frozen mocha.
Jeanette is survived by her devoted husband, John C. Sekula, with whom she would have celebrated 52 years of marriage this August. She leaves behind her loving children: Jeanine L. Bonk and her husband Eric, along with their sons Stanton and Emmett; Jacqueline Record and her husband Scott, along with their son Spencer; and stepson John C. Sekula and his wife Jackie, along with their children John and Brooke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederic and Nettie Love Horner, her sister Christina Richardson (2007), and her brother John Horner (1964).
She will always be remembered for her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support. As she often said, "If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all."
A visitation and service will be held on March 26th, beginning at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Oakdale Cemetery. A reception will take place at Venue 142 starting around 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeanette’s name to the Mike Shane Memorial Fund, which helps reduce barriers for patients seeking a second opinion on their initial Cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis.
