James “Jim” Bergman, 94, passed away on February 25, 2025. He was born in Manistique Michigan on December 25 1930 to Clifford and Bernice (Gunnarson) Bergman.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joy, the love of his life for 48 years. His children by a previous marriage, Steven Bergman and Deborah (Bergman) Armstrong along with a brother Gerald Bergman preceded him in death. He is survived by 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren as well as a sister Marjorie Decker of Northville, New York.
Jim divided his growing up years between upper Michigan and upstate New York. He graduated from Lake Luzerne New York high school. After a short tour with the US Naval Reserve, Jim enlisted in the US Air Force. He trained as an aircraft mechanic and worked on the B-29 moving on to the more modern B-52. For a number of years, he worked as an instructor of Aircraft engines but completed his career as a Minuteman Missile maintenance supervisor with the rank of Master Sergeant.
Moving to Florida, Jim attended night school obtaining a Bachelor degree in Management while working as a postal clerk in Casselberry and then Deland. Jim was appointed Postmaster of Barberville, Florida and served there until his retirement in 1989. Jim practice the time honored craft of coopering for six years before moving on to woodturning and wood carving.
Together with his wife, Joy, they explored this great country in depth including Alaska and Hawaii. They toured Canada, Mexico and Guatemala in addition to visiting the rest of Central America and most of the Caribbean Islands. J
im has served as past president of the Friends of Deleon Springs State Park and past president of the Deltona Woodcarvers Club. He and his wife could often be found demonstrating their crafts at various shows in Florida.
He will be laid to rest at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery on Friday, March 7, at 1:30PM. Lankford Funeral Home is in charge.
