Gertraud "Trudy" Amalie George

Gertraud “Trudy” Amalie George, age 93, left this world in peace this past week. A life well lived with kindness, joy and love for her extended family and friends. Trudy is survived by her sons, Richard and Ben, daughter-in-law Lilis George, granddaughters Michelle Walker and Christie Newman and five great grandchildren, Carlee, Will, Alex, Joe and Lily. Family in Germany includes nephew Jurgen Stich, his wife Elke and their son Christian, his wife Susanna, their kids Hannah and Max. Niece Brigitte Stranz, husband Lothar and their daughter Ursula also reside in Germany with their 2 grandchildren. Trudy’s childhood saw much loss as a kid growing up in Endorf, Germany during WW II. Thereafter, she met the love of her life, Antoine (Tony) George who was serving in the US Army. It took them 3 years to get approval to marry and for Trudy to immigrate to the United States.
The Family moved often in the early years (Pennsylvania, Georgia, South Carolina, Germany, Washington State, then finally to Florida in 1969, moving to DeLand in 1985.
A lifelong gardener, Trudy was a member of the Rose Circle of the Deland Garden Club and was known to be happiest tending her plants and providing for others. Son Ben, a recognized expert in growing Camelias, honored her by officially naming a new camellia variety he developed in her name…camellia japonica “Trudy George”.
Trudy asked that anyone wishing to please support Disabled American Veterans in lieu of flowers.
