Eugene Elmer Higby, affectionately known as "Gene" and "Uncle Bud" to his loved ones, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was 91 years old.
Born on October 26, 1933, in Gloversville, New York, Gene was the beloved son of Marie Joyce Robbins and E. Eugene Higby and the cherished younger brother of Joyce. His upbringing was enriched by the close-knit bonds of a large, loving family in Gloversville.
Gene's academic journey led him to graduate from high school and pursue higher education at Clarkson College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. His career began at DuPont Chemical before he transitioned to Buffalo Forge in Buffalo, New York. It was there that he met the love of his life, Shirley Duprat. Together, they built a beautiful life centered around family, love, and adventure.
Gene's professional journey continued as he accepted a position with Quaker Chemical, which prompted a family move to Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He became a key figure in the company’s paper division, eventually managing its sales operations. His career exemplified his dedication, intellect, and leadership.
Following in his father's footsteps, Gene became a 32nd-degree Mason, a role that reflected his commitment to community and tradition.
Beyond his professional life, Gene had a zest for adventure and an enduring passion for the outdoors. In his youth, he was an avid downhill skier and tennis player. Later, he became a dedicated runner, proudly completing the Philadelphia Marathon and Half Marathon. His passion for golf spanned his lifetime, and even after a stroke left him partially paralyzed, he continued to enjoy the sport, riding along with Shirley on the course and cheering on friends from the deck of their home in Savannah, Georgia.
The Adirondack Mountains held a special place in his heart, as the family often camped, fished, and created cherished memories there. Gene also had a knack for woodworking, crafting beautiful furniture and whimsical birdhouses. In retirement, his creative spirit flourished as he embraced painting, bringing both wood and landscapes to life with his artistic touch. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of a good poker game with friends.
Gene was a devoted husband to his late wife, Shirley Duprat Higby, who preceded him in death on June 18, 2019. He was a proud and loving father to his daughter, Lisa Higby Carboni, and his son-in-law, Peter V. Tanner. He was also the father of his beloved son, Kevin Eugene Higby, who passed away as an infant in 1969. Known as "Uncle Bud" to his extended family, he was a figure of love, humor, and support to all who knew him.
Interment for both Gene and Shirley will take place at a later date in Johnstown, New York, where their love story will come full circle.
In remembering Gene, we honor a man of wisdom, adventure, and quiet strength—a man who faced life’s challenges with dignity and heart. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
