David Brian Coffin, aged 61, peacefully passed away on April 15, 2024, at Advent Health Fish Hospice in Orange City, FL. He was born on December 30, 1962, in Bethesda, Maryland, and spent his formative years in DeLand, FL, attending Boston Avenue Elementary before graduating with the DeLand High School Class of 1980. An athlete at heart, David played basketball during high school and also enjoyed the game of golf.
Following his graduation, David enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, dedicating seven years of his life to service and rising to the rank of BM3/E4. Notably, he served on a protective detail for President George H.W. Bush off the coast of Kennebunkport, Maine, at the Walker's Point Estate. For his exemplary service, David was honored with several awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, two good conduct awards, and a Unit Commendation Medal. Later, he transitioned to work as a correctional officer for the State of Delaware before returning to DeLand, where he spent the remainder of his years.
David's true passion lay in his family. He lovingly cared for his father and maintained close ties with relatives across the country, including regular Sunday calls to his Aunt Barbara Ann until her passing just one day before David.
He is survived by his brother Mike Coffin and sister-in-law Melissa Baker Coffin of New Smyrna Beach, cousins Robin Coffin Vedder of DeLand and Kim Coffin of Mount Dora, Aunt Joyce Bruschayt of DeLand, numerous other out-of-state relatives, and many cherished friends, including Rick Boldonado of DeLand. He was preceded in death by his father, McKinley "Mic" Coffin Sr., mother Sandra Jo (O'Brien) Coffin, Uncle William S. "Ric" Coffin, and Uncle Fred Bruschayt.
Lankford Funeral Home is handling David's arrangements, and a private memorial will be held by his family in the near future to honor his life and legacy.
