Charles Sheldon Murphy, affectionately known as Sheldon, passed away suddenly after an
unfortunate accident at his home on June 22, 2024, at the age of 91. He was a remarkable individual who defied age with his vigor and spirit, often declaring, "I can do the job better than
men half my age!"
Born and raised in DeLeon Springs, Sheldon enlisted in the Army National Guard after high school and served his community with honor. As a young man he embarked on a career that showcased his strong work ethic and dedication. For many years, he delivered milk for Green's Dairy and TG Lee Dairy until 1968, after which he worked for Phillips 66 as a Regional
Manager until 1975.
Returning to DeLand in 1975, Sheldon fulfilled his entrepreneurial spirit by establishing
CS Murphy Fernery, a venture that he nurtured and managed until his retirement to Edgewater, FL. on the Intracoastal. His green thumb and love for plants were evident in the thriving business he built.
Beyond his professional achievements, Sheldon was known for his kindness, generosity, and zest
for life. He loved dancing, going to bluegrass music festivals and entertaining at his home. His
hobbies included boating, shrimping, clamming, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, and
enjoying a little gambling now and then.
Sheldon was a Lifetime member of the DeLand Elks Club 1463, a testament to his community
spirit and involvement.
He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Fern Murphy, his daughters Patricia (Jon Moore)
and Sandra (Bob Allinson), his son, Chuck (Theresa Murphy), his grandson, Kristopher (Melody
Moore), his granddaughters Aimee Moore and Brandy (Bobby McCostlin), and six
great-grandchildren that adore him. He was predeceased by his parents, Cohen and Hilda
Murphy, his brothers, Forrest and Wilbur Murphy and granddaughter, Jennifer White.
A visitation to celebrate Sheldon's life will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to
3:00 p.m. at Lankford Funeral Home, followed by a service at 3:00 p.m. Burial and Veteran
Honors will be accorded at Oakdale Cemetery.
In his 91 years, Sheldon Murphy touched the lives of many with his warmth, determination, and
lust for life. He was a Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather. He will be deeply missed and
fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
