Annette McElveen Fleishel Smith

01/02/1927 - 01/29/2021

Annette McElveen Fleishel Smith, 94, of DeLand, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 29th, 2021. She was born the youngest of three sisters to Claudia and Paul McElveen in Stilson, Georgia, on January 2, 1927. Annette married George Smith, Jr. in the Citadel Chapel in Charleston, South Carolina, and moved to DeLand in 1946. She owned and operated Smith Feed & Seed Store with her late husband, George, until his death in 1972. Following sale of the business in 1974, Annette began a successful thirty-year real estate sales career. Annette married Victor Fleishel of DeLand in 1974. Victor was the longtime manager of Fountain’s Men’s Store in DeLand. They enjoyed golfing and traveling to many international destinations until Victor’s death in 1990. Annette was an excellent golfer and she and her late husband, George, were original members of the DeLand Country Club. She competed successfully in many tournaments, winning her flight in the 1962 Women’s Amateur South Atlantic Golf Tournament (The Sally) held in Ormond Beach since 1926. In her later years, she became an excellent bridge player and competed regularly at the DeLand Bridge Club, often winning or placing and eventually playing online bridge with her bridge friends until shortly before her death. Annette enjoyed watching her sons and grandchildren participate in sports and later closely followed college sports, as well as professional golf. She was also quite knowledgeable about the teams and players, and often surprised others with her commentary. Annette was a longtime member of the St. Barnabas Church, serving as a member of the Vestry and Altar Guild, Senior Warden and Secretary. She was a member of the Junior Service League, the DeLand Garden Club and the DeLand Bridge Club, serving on the Board. She also donated many volunteer hours to local charities and was honored as a DeLand Hero by the DeLand City Commission. Annette is survived by her two sons, George (Sharon) Smith of DeLand and granddaughters Nicole and Valerie, and Paul (Missi) Smith of Winter Springs and grandson Ethan; Steve Fleishel (Mignon) of Woodstock, Georgia and children Ashley and James, and Vicky Fleishel Wells of Jacksonville, Florida and children Vicky and Chris. The family wishes to thank all of her many friends who made a special effort to visit Annette during this most difficult time and ask that donations in remembrance of her be made to the St. Barnabas Church of DeLand Altar Guild. She was a wonderful lady, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed.
