Obituary

The Rev. Dr. Karen S. Engelman

Jan 5, 1947 Beaver Falls PA.   -   Jan. 10, 2018 Deland FL.

The Rev. Dr. Karen Engelman transitioned peacefully on January 10th 2018. Loving partner for 37 years to Marguerite Jhonson and parent to Emkay Forest and JJ Speights. She graduated from high school in Joliet IL and received her Undergraduate degree at Valparaiso University. She received her Masters in Divinity Union Theological Seminary in 1986, and also had Education Administration Certification from Hofstra University NY. Karen taught 35 years (1967-02) as a high school teacher and summer school principal on Long Island NY at Smithtown. She was Associate Pastor then Senior Pastor at Lexington United Methodist Church in NYC from 1994-06. Karen graduated from Teachers College Columbia University in NYC with her Doctoral Degree in International Education (1987), after taking 2 years sabbatical which included 3 months in Japan doing research. Karen spent a summer in India in the early 70’s developing curriculum for NY public schools. She continued on sponsoring after school programs for charities during her high school teaching years, and many Japanese exchange programs as well. Karen was committed to learning and teaching throughout her life for herself and others. She had extraordinary accomplishments in professional Education.

Karen loved to travel. Her various trips around the world included Israel, Egypt, Thailand, Japan, China, Europe, India, and Burma. She enjoyed cruises and vacationing and went often with Marguerite on special trips to Hawaii and Mexico among others. Her last cruise was in December 2017 to Key West and the Bahamas with Marguerite. During her life she resided and/or owner property in Joliet IL, Northport, Inwood, Island Park, Centerport in NY, North Miami, FL Pittsburgh PA, and DeLand FL.

Karen was also a loving provider for her family. Karen’s commitment to a strong work ethic, perseverance, and knowledge was a great example for Marguerite and her children. She was practical and responsible, and also wise. She retired in 2002 from school and in 2006 from the Ministry and then shared life with Marguerite in their North Miami condo while visiting grandchildren in CA. & Central FL while still travelling often. Her love of cars was great and she tested quite a few. When she turned 69 on her birthday she went on the Nitro Drag Car in Daytona Beach (75mph) in 200 feet. She loved pets and had many small dogs including her Teddy. A truly remarkable life of adventure, understanding, passion and teaching, it’s amazing to reflect on her accomplishments in both professional and personal relationships. Playful, lovable, humorous, and knowledgeable, she will live on in our hearts with fond and everlasting memories.
