Maria Carlson

Obituary of Maria Carlson

Maria De Lourdes Carlson, 72, passed away in the loving embrace of her family on February 22, 2018.  She spent her last months surrounded by her family, friends, and a vibrant community that loved her dearly.  There will be a Celebration of Maria’s Life at Collective Church 111 S. Alabama St. Deland, FL 32724, on Friday, March 2nd at 6 pm.

Maria was born in Mexico City, Mexico on June 9, 1945 to her parents Mario Moguel, and Dolores Coello Moguel.  She had a degree in Elementary Education, but passionately wanted to be a nun in the Roman Catholic faith.  A vacation to Boston, Massachusetts changed her path forever when she met her future husband on a blind date.  She remained devoutly Catholic and was forever a servant to her Lord and Savior.  She married Roine Paige Carlson on November 8, 1969 and so began their adventurous journey that lasted 49 years and allowed them to travel the world. They lived in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri, Mexico City, and Minnesota.  They finally decided to call Ft. Myers, FL their forever home, until Maria and Roine moved to Deland, FL to have family assist with Maria’s declining health.

Maria spent her working life teaching, volunteering, as a social worker for the migrant community in South Florida, and as a translator - for hospitals, within the judicial system, and in a college setting.  She was passionate in every area of her life but especially when it came to her family.  She always remained very connected to her family in Mexico, desired nothing more than to be with her four grandchildren.  She had collections of dolls, travel spoons, thimbles, Betty Boop - anything, rosaries, watches, sunglasses…you name it, she collected it.  She loved to dance, especially to the songs of her childhood and youth.  She spent her last weeks dancing in her bed -as best as she could, singing these songs that were the soundtrack to her life.

Maria was known to all who met her as a loving friend.  She was wildly mischievous, smart, funny, and caring.  She dotted over her husband, children, grandchildren and their friends, as well as her pets, throughout her entire life.  Her laugh and smile were infectious, and people couldn’t help but gravitate to her.  She made friends everywhere she ever went.  She will be missed by all who knew her.  She is survived by her husband Roine Paige Carlson, of Ft. Myers, Florida, her daughter Natasha Watts (Mark) Deland, FL, son Nathan Carlson (Kara) Bethlehem, New Hampshire, and her four grandchildren Baylor Watts, Grace Watts, Maya Watts, and Nicholas Carlson and her fur baby Fluffy.  She has too many aunts, uncles, nieces, & nephews to name - but all were loved.
