Obituary of Jeanne Thomson

Jeanne Gilliatt Thomson, 89, passed away peacefully at Atria Park of Lake Forest assisted living facility on November 18, 2017.

Jeanne was born to Harry and Harriett Gilliatt on June 4, 1928 in Holyoke, MA, and her parents predeceased her.  Jeanne’s professional life included secretarial work in Holyoke before she met her future husband, John Thomson.  John and Jeanne married there in 1954.

Since John was a career military officer in the Air Force, Jeanne traveled extensively during the 1960s while stationed in Germany.  The young family traveled throughout Europe during this time and he returned to the states on occasion, where their three children were born:  John, Walter and Jane.  When returning to the states, they lived in Biloxi, MS, Papillion, NE and their last home, Orange City, FL.

To help put their children through college, Jeanne returned to her secretarial career by serving Orange City Elementary from the late 1960s to her retirement in 1980.  She single-handedly mastered a variety of duties such as receptionist, bookkeeper, and even school nurse.  Her organizational skills and devotion to the students and their families were legendary.

After retirement, Jeanne and John enjoyed tennis, sailing, and traveling to military reunions.  After John passed away in 2001, Jeanne learned to live independently.  She often walked a mile a day, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was an active grandparent to her grandchildren.  She is remembered for her warmth, humor and vibrant energy.

Her three children John, Orange City, FL; Walter, Weaverville, NC; and Jane, Deland, FL, and six grandchildren (Emily, Mac, Kevin, Sara, Emma, and Lexi) survive Jeanne.  All who knew her will miss her, as she was deeply loved.

The family would like to acknowledge the staff at Atria and Vitas Hospice for their attentive care of Jeanne during her final months.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Meals on Wheels, c/o the Council of Aging of Volusia County, 160 N. Beach St., Daytona Beach, FL  32114 or a charity of your choice.
