Obituary of Thomas "Poppy" Farnsworth

Thomas ("Poppy") David Farnsworth, Jr. passed away peacefully at his Deltona, FL home, on Friday, August 25, 2017, with family. He is preceded in death, by his daughter Victoria Miller. He is survived by his wife, of 46 years, the love of his life, Barbara Binkley Farnsworth; Grandchildren; Vanessa Farnsworth (Carlos), Jacobe Miller and Jaymie Stripling; great-granddaughters; Kyleigh Lewis, Karleigh Ortega and Willow Miller, and  he is also survived by his sisters, Glenna Nail (Terrell), Carol Stevens and many nieces and nephews.

Tom was born June 15, 1941 in Plant City, Florida to Thomas David Farnsworth, Sr. and Gladys Smith Farnsworth. He grew up in Haines City, FL and graduated from Haines City HS, in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army and later graduated from Georgia Southern College, of Statesboro, GA. His education continued with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Nova University.

He began his career with the Parks and Recreation Department in Cocoa Beach, FL and he was later employed by the City of Orlando as the Director of Parks and Recreation. He was also employed by the cities of Altamonte Springs, FL.  and Sanford, FL. Mr. Farnsworth was honored to serve as the Director of the State of Florida Parks and Recreation Department.

Tom had a passion for sports and fitness. He and his wife, Barbara, were Co-founders of the Fitness Pit in Deltona, FL, from the early 1990’s until 2006. He had a love for coaching and playing softball, until his retirement. He was a humanitarian and he was loved by all who knew him.  

The family will receive friends at Lankford Funeral Home in DeLand, FL, Wednesday on August 30, 2017 from 11:00am-12:00pm with a Memorial Service Following at 12:00pm.
