Mrs. Bump was born in Van Nuys, California, on June 9, 1943 to Floyd Lavern Fitch and Ruth Emily Houck Fitch. She grew up on a dairy farm in Walton, NY with 3 brothers, Lavern Fitch, Gary Fitch and Reginald Fitch and 2 sisters, Janet Hartwell and Darlene Leech. She was very proud of her family’s business and what the dairy industry stood for in America. As a child, she enjoyed playing basketball and softball. She was a 4-Her who showed her family’s Ayrshire cattle all over the state. She continued to be an active 4-H supporter throughout her entire life. She graduated at the top of her class from Mount Upton Central High School in 1961. Mrs. Bump continued her education at SUNY Geneseo College pursuing a degree in Library Science. But more importantly this is where she met her husband of 37 years, John Bump, by way of introduction through his sister Roselle Bump who was her roommate. She and her husband loved tinkering with diesels and driving the country in their semi, and she adored him until he passed in September of 1999.

She treasured her time with all her loved ones, and shared her time between her immediate family in Florida and her extended family and friends in upstate New York. She was an amazing mother to Austin Bump, John Bump and Sarah Elizabeth Bump Sieg. She was always a phone call away. She loved the many interests that each of them had. She also enjoyed being a dearly loved grandmother, aunt, and sister. She was always in the audience or nearby to encourage and support them. She was the center of our family and If you wanted to know what someone was up to or how they were doing, she was always the one to ask. Like a little hummingbird, she flitted among all her loved ones and wasn’t afraid to reach out or just stop-by, bringing joy where ever she visited. She genuinely cared about her family and friends.

Besides her family, her joys were bluegrass music, gardening, the country roads and crisp cool air of upstate New York, and, of course, a good yard sale. She was a writer, a history buff and an avid reader. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary.

Services will be held at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church at 44 Main Street, Binghamton, NY, on September 2nd, 2017 at 3pm, followed by a celebration of her life gathering at the Hitching Post, 1532 State Route 7, Port Crane, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lake County 4-H Association, 1951 Woodlea Rd, Tavares, Florida 32778 in memory of Betty Fitch Bump.
