Obituary of Mary E "Birdie/Bette" Heebner
DELAND — Mary E. “Birdie” or “Bette” Heebner, 97, departed this world May 10, 2017, at Ridgecrest Nursing Home. A private memorial service will be held at a later date for family members. Mrs. Heebner was bom Oct. 4, 1919, in Port Washington, New York, the daughter of Marie Bird and John Bird.
Birdie came from a talented musical family, and received a scholarship to the Stetson University School of Music in piano. It was there that she met her husband and lifetime companion, Robert S. Heebner Jr., who preceded her in death on April 18, 2010.
Alter graduation from Stetson University, Birdie followed her husband during his service as a naval aviator in World War II, through his employment in Indiana and North Carolina, and his return to DeLand in 1954, where she has been a resident ever since.
Mrs. Heebner was a deputy clerk of the circuit court for many years.
She was active in St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand, a member and officer of the DeLand Garden Club, and she played golf at the DeLand Country Club.
Birdie and her husband loved their farm in Glenwood, tending cows, their fernery and their garden.
The couple loved to travel. Their adventures took them as far as Australia, and included many trips flying all over the United States, with Bob piloting his plane and Birdie acting as navigator.In later years, a motorhome was their favorite mode of travel.
Birdie, aka Mary, was a longtime resident of Ridgecrest Nursing Home in DeLand. The family is very appreciative of the care and comfort provided by the staff to their mother for many years.
